WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that the risk of monkeypox has been established in non-endemic countries. However, they are preventable at this point if proper precautionary measures are taken.

More than 1000 monkeypox cases have been reported to WHO, in the current outbreak outside the countries in Africa, where it is an endemic disease. At a media briefing in Geneva, Mr. Tedros stated that more than 1400 cases of monkeypox are suspected in Africa along with 66 deaths. He also added that the outbreak is showing signs of community transmission in some countries.

WHO to control the outbreak has recommended isolating the monkeypox infected people. The Healthcare regulator has also advised post-exposure vaccination for all including health workers or close contacts of infected people within 4 days of exposure. The WHO has called it an ideal period for immunization and asked several countries to consider it. The vaccines used for prevention were originally designed against smallpox, a dangerous viral infection that was eradicated in the 1980s. However, the vaccines have shown suitable efficacy against the monkeypox virus as suggested by several studies.
